FREE Air at Sculpture on the Gulf 2011

An oversize hand-pump installed on the headland of Matiatia Bay on Waiheke Island visually connected a yellow hose disappearing into the ground with a buoyant sculpture in the ocean below. Pumping brought the installation to life, with the end of the hose suddenly appearing from the ocean’s depth and drawing across its surface giving viewers the ability to create and control movements of unexpected magnitude. Beside regular visitors to the outdoor exhibition, people on boats and ferries, commercial fishermen, swimmers and divers  became unexpectedly  participants of the spectacle between nature and culture and reality and imagination.
